Experience in one to one coaching
Barney has over 30 years experience in leadership, coaching and management, enabling people to harness their unique strengths to improve their performance and impact.
Barney has considerable experience working with school principals as a coach on the CSL coaching service and has consistently received very positive feedback. He has worked as Chairman of the Board of Management of a Voluntary Secondary School and as a Board member of an Education and Training Board (ETB) School leading and managing the amalgamation of a Voluntary and an ETB School into a community college.
Specialist expertise includes:
- Enabling you to work with your management team to achieve effective delegation
- Strategies for achieving work life balance
- Working effectively with difficult people and situations
- Goal setting and managing time to best effect
- Raising individual awareness and developing reflective abilities
- Planning and identifying your high pay off activities
- How to say no while keep channels of communication open and effective
While Barney's coaching style is person-centred and very supportive, it is challenging in that principals are facilitated to achieve clarity on what they are trying to achieve and to name accurately what is happening in their personal and professional lives.
Barney Callaghan has worked with me in a coaching capacity for the past 12 months. It really was a gift to have Barney come and listen to me; I learned a lot about myself. Barney helped me identify my skills and strengths and increased my awareness about areas I could develop. I liked the way he encouraged me to use appropriate, clear and positive language and encouraged me to build in assessment into the writing of any plans that I made. The coaching has helped me to be more proactive and effective.
It is Barney’s gentle nature, kindness, patience and uncanny ability to make you think that has particularly worked for me in our coaching relationship. His wealth of experience and his willingness to share has greatly supported and encouraged me on my particular journey. He has encouraged and challenged me but never judged and as I begin a new school year I feel more confident and reassured that Yes, I am doing a good job and Yes, I can continue to do so!
It is my first time engaging with a personal coach and I enjoyed every minute of it. From the very first point of contact, Barney put me at my ease and I felt very happy engaging in the process. Barney is a true professional. It has been wonderful to have a third party to discuss and work out problems with. Our meetings were always held at a time and place convenient to me. Although challenging at times, sessions are often coloured with wonderful quotes and a sense of fun. I know I am in a much better position as a school leader and on a personal level because of my engagement with Barney.
